The Industry department has retracted the $120 million grant it offered a proposed battery material refinery hub project in Western Australia more than a year after it was announced, plunging another $700 million of funding pledged by the previous government into doubt.
The pioneering critical minerals project led by Pure Battery Technologies (PBT) was announced as a recipient of the biggest grant from the Coalition government’s flagship manufacturing program last year.
The Australian-first $400 million precursor Cathode Active Material (pCAM) hub in Kalgoorlie was to be developed by PBT in partnership with Poseidon Nickel, and aimed to produce 50,000 tonnes per annum of the key inputs to electric vehicle batteries.
